When I practiced naturopathic medicine many people with chronic or frequent bouts of heartburn, GERD (acid reflux), gas, bloating, repeated mild food poisoning and other digestive issues responded well to Betaine HCI and Pepsin. The primary reasons why we need stomach acid are that it kills harmful microbes like parasites and food-borne bacteria that cause food poisoning, it breaks down food making the nutrients more readily digestible and metabolized further down the digestive tract and it causes the absorption of some forms of vitamins A, Bs, C, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc and others. As we age our ability to make stomach acid decreases, it also decreases with nutritional deficiencies and in those who frequently take anti-acids.

The most common symptoms of low stomach acid are: burning, indigestion, gas, bloating, and acid reflux (GERD). Because the symptoms of low and high stomach acid are the same, Americans are trained to jump to the over-acid conclusion because acid neutralizing drugs can temporarily lesson some symptoms. This is unfortunate because anti-acids makes the underlying reason for the symptoms worse.

There’s a highly accurate medical test called the Heidelberg Test to determine whether low or high stomach acid is causing your symptoms but unfortunately it’s rarely used because western docs aren’t trained to look for underlying causes (they’re trained to treat symptoms) and most aren’t even aware that low stomach acid has the same symptoms so all they know is to prescribe or advise anti-acids. To them looking for the underlying cause of your symptoms by ordering the Heidelberg test seems unnecessary. There’s also a less accurate test, just have a lab look for undigested meat particles in a stool sample, which indicates low stomach acid but is not a definitive test like the Heidelberg.

The third test is an easy self-test: use any good quality Betaine HCL with Pepsin (or without pepsin if you’re allergic to pork) like this one and take the recommended dose on the bottle (for this product that’s 1 capsule) at the start of each meal for a couple of days. If your symptoms consistently worsen every time you do this then you have an over-acid stomach and need to discontinue taking Betaine HCL and switch to Tri Salts taken with meals Tri Salts 200 gm. But if you have no symptoms or you get an improvement of your symptoms then your problem is a low-acid stomach and you’re well on your way to eliminating the underlying cause. You can simply go on taking 1 capsule with each meal if you have no symptoms. If you didn’t notice any difference then slowly increase the dose until your symptoms decrease then either stay at that dose or move on to find the optimum dose for you (this is not something you have to do, it’s just a standard test most naturopaths are trained to administer to find the optimum dose). The standard test to determine what dose is best for you is called the `challenge test’ where you slowly keep increasing your dose until your stomach feels a warm heat from a little too much acid, then back down to the previous dose. Don’t open the capsules to adjust your dose since taking it without the capsule’s protection can irritate or damage your mouth, throat and esophagus. Just to safeguard against injuring your stomach lining let your body get used to the increased acid by slowly adding 1 more capsule every week or every 3 days.

If you still have a hard time adjusting your dose or your symptoms haven’t gone away remember that healthcare practitioners in alternative medicine can help you. You might need to add other digestive enzymes like Life Extension Enhanced Super Digestive Enzyme, 100 Vegetarian Capsules You might have to eliminate the worse offending foods since food allergies and food sensitivities can also cause the same symptoms, so can parasites and other digestive issues. Or you might read No More Heartburn: Stop the Pain in 30 Days–Naturally! : The Safe, Effective Way to Prevent and Heal Chronic Gastrointestinal Disorders to eliminate the underlying causes and discover other simple ways to heal your issues.

    Some known concerns and warnings:
Pepsin is derived from porcine so if you’re allergic to pork then try taking Betaine HCI by itself.
You shouldn’t take this if you’re on medication that inhibits stomach HCI production such as H2-blocking drugs and proton pump inhibitors. Don’t take this without the supervision of a doctor if you have a history of ulcers…

I’m a young person, late 20s, who has been ill with mystery bowel issues (the unpredictable, potentially uncontrolable kind – ick!) for two years. Doctors can’t figure me out. I had a bottle of enzymes sitting in my cabinet that I’d never tried, so as a last resort I used them. After that meal, I didn’t have an instant ‘urge’ and run off to the restroom. I read the ingredients carefully and noticed they included Betaine HCL. It was the only ingredient in that enzyme mix that wasn’t in the ones I’d tried before, to no avail. After about a week, I decided to order this straight Betaine and Pepsin supplement. The bottle says to take one pill with a meal, however for dinner and lunch, I require 2. Guess what! My bowel issues are almost unnoticeable!!! Not even daily Imodium and Lomotil could give me this comfort. It’s not a complete cure, but I don’t constantly feel icky and worried about what my body will do at any moment. If you’ve been diagnosed with the old “IBS” crapola, then you might consider low stomach acid as your malady. Doctors haver NEVER mentioned this to me, yet all my symptoms fit the bill. If this supplement stops working for me, I’ll edit my review at that time.

Shipment was quick and received in a timely manner.
