I first started using desiccated liver about 40 years ago. The first time I mixed a heaping tablespoon in tomato juice-it made a thick, brownish slurry that immediately came up, it simply would not stay down. I used tablets for awhile instead. So all this discussion of putting it in your smoothie doesn’t convince me. I use another technique now: I put a heaping tablespoon in my mouth, hold it there (trying not to breathe), and take a big swig of water which I swish around so that the liver powder goes down as close as possible to unnoticeably. There’s a little after taste but I don’t gag. My body looks forward to it, actually. It does do wonders for your energy, skin, gums, mood. I hate it, but I love it. And I take it every day. I’m in my 60’s now and a grandmother, but I still have wrinkle-free, collagen-plump skin (plus gray-hair and arthritis-I’m certainly not Suzanne Somers)and I do feel the difference with liver. It makes my lips and cheeks pink. And this is good when you’re old, it’s easy to look washed out, if you don’t eat well. I’m not a body builder-the only work-out I do is housework (quite strenuous, really), and 5 miles almost every day on my stationary bike. I always took it through my pregnancies too–all 5 of them (in 8 years). Right after delivery I’d take a big spoon of the stuff when no one was looking, and then I’d come home within a few hours and start doing the housework and taking care of the kids (with no help). Add brewers yeast to this, eat lots of vegetables and fruits, and you’ll do well. This Now Liver Powder is like pouring pure vitality down your gullet. Try it. It’s awful!

I actually prefer using the powder form of liver than taking the pills. I use it in my morning pre workout smoothie in combination with cacao powder, maca, banana, peanut butter and milk. It blends in perfectly and with the cacao in there you barely taste the liver. I’ve taken it with Green SuperFood and that is actually quite harsh but I feel good taking the stuff. I think the combination of liver powder, maca, and cacao are a homerun for energy. They have other benefits, but I’ve felt it most in the energy arena.

Liver dog treats!, March 12, 2010

This may not be your favorite review because I bought the powdered liver to make treats for my dog. She loves them! Treats I’ve made for her in the past have not sparked any interest at all, but she will beg for these! My guess is that the earlier treats lost their meaty smell/flavor in the mixing and baking, but the liver held up. When the supply gets low, I will be buying more.
